Executives and physicians who choose to grow their ability to face complexity generally pass through four stages.[i] These stages are not easy, but they are essential steps toward greater cognitive and emotional agility:
1.) Unconsciously Immune:
When you begin the adaptive-change journey, you are Unconsciously Immune to Change. This means you are unable to see when your own thinking is counterproductive. Because you can’t see your own worn-out thinking clearly, much of your cognitive and emotional energies is wasted. Growth and change are experienced as threat or intrusion.
2.) Consciously Immune:
Then we guide you to create your Immunity to Change map. That’s when you become Consciously Immune. This is the most painful stage of the Fern EPC coaching journey because you begin to see your old “Big Assumptions” in action but can’t fully stop them. This stage requires you to put shame and self-judgment aside. This is when you see how you’ve been wasting cognitive and emotional energies, and you grasp how changing your worldview can grow your ability to manage complexity.
3.) Consciously Released:
This is the stage of the Fern EPC coaching journey in which you begin to transcend. It takes energy and it takes work, but you can Consciously Release yourself from the old thought, feeling, and behavior patterns. This is when you make real progress toward your improvement goals. This is when you begin to trend yourself toward the Self-Authored or Self-Transforming levels of adult development, the levels required to face complexity and/or to lead.
4.) Unconsciously Released:
Freedom from worn-out thinking is the ultimate aim of the Fern EPC coaching process. You are Unconsciously Released. You automatically act and think in ways that run counter to the old patterns that stood in your way. New beliefs, understandings, and behaviors have replaced your “Big Assumptions,” and you have made significant progress, if not full success, towards meeting your improvement goals.
