One of the most important leadership disciplines is learning not to personalize conflict, disagreement, or other difficult interactions.
It takes leadership maturity and agility to keep your feet on the ground when someone is hitting their stuff.
People are under pressure, teams are stressed, people project their issues, and systems are complex and often ambiguous. It’s not unusual for people to express fear, exhaustion, confusion, or unmet needs in counterproductive ways.
Joining them only accentuates problems.
Of course, we don’t tolerate abusive behavior, and setting limits and boundaries is often necessary. But it’s an important leadership quality to know, “Not everything directed at you is about you.”
